ARTISTIC TEAM

Renowned Indonesian dancer and choreographer, Rianto connects to a rich traditional past to inform the present. In HIJRA’H, he explores the history and culture of the Indonesian island Sulawesi. In the island’s people and history he uncovers gender expression in dance forms dating back to pre-Islam animism, where transgender spiritual figures were greatly valued. 
With acclaimed filmmaker Garin Nugroho, collaborator and vocalist Cahwati Sugiarto and Sulawesi performance maker Abdi Karya, they mine the rich seam between traditional and contemporary culture, and between male and female. 
Combining dance, music and film, their onstage ritual reveals gender fluidity is not just a contemporary phenomenon, but in fact an important and respected role in Indonesian culture now under threat by conservative religious politics.

ACCESSIBLE PARKING

There are a number of accessible parking spaces located on Little Collins Street and surrounding streets. Parking is also available at a number of nearby car parks, including Federation Square Car Park, which has accessible car spaces on each level.

ACCESSIBLE DROP OFF

Collins Street, north side, just east of Swanston Street. Accessible parking bay and loading zone on Little Collins Street near corner of Swanston Street.

ACCESSIBLE ENTRANCE

Enter The Capitol Arcade from Swanston Street or Howie Place. Halfway through the arcade there’s a lift (between the jeweller and the dry cleaner). Take the lift up to The Capitol’s Foyer level. From the Foyer, a separate lift provides access to the Theatre, Salon and Lounge levels inside The Capitol.

ACCESSIBLE BATHROOMS

Wheelchair accessible amenities are located on the Foyer level. Facilities include a baby change area.

ACCESSIBLE SEATING

The Capitol Theatre has eight accessible spaces, accompanied by eight companion seats. Four of these spaces are accessible from the Foyer level. The remaining four spaces are accessible from the Salon level (Level 3) via the lift. Please ask front of house staff for directions or to accompany you to one of these spaces if assistance is required.
